BRISTOL, Va. — When Sam Silcox first manned the radio room for the Bristol Virginia Police Department, there was a teletype machine and three shortwave transmission systems. In his 41 years on the watch, emergency communications underwent massive changes and advancements, but Silcox's dedication to the job never wavered, Bristol Police Chief Bill Price said.

"I've never worked with any man who was dedicated to the job like he was. The most important thing I could say about Sam is he is a good man," Price said during a Bristol Virginia City Council meeting earlier this month when Silcox was honored.
