Prep Roundup: J.J. Kelly Clinches Lonesome Pine District Title

J.J. Kelly clinched the Lonesome Pine District regular-season baseball title in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night.

The Indians continued their offensive assault on LPD opponents with a 26-0 victory over Appalachia.

The heroes were numerous for Kelly (16-2, 9-0), which claimed its second straight crown.

The Indians were led by Cody Bentley’s 4-for-4 effort at the plate, while Matt Dotson (three hits), Nick Roop (3-for-3, home run), Aaron Gardner (2-for-3, home run, five RBIs), Zak Sturgill (3-for-4, three RBIs), Justin Wilson (2-for-3, three RBIs), Alex Maine (two hits), Blake Roberts (two hits) and Robert VanGundy (three RBIs) all produced.

Zak Sturgill struck out 11 en route to tossing a no-hitter. Appalachia’s lone hit was by Cody Richardson in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs fell to 7-8 overall and 1-7 in the LPD.

Honaker 8, Twin Valley 2

Honaker improved to 15-1 and clinched the Black Diamond District regular-season title with a win over Twin Valley.

Aaron Whited went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Honaker, which is 7-0 in the BDD. Adam Honaker added two hits for the Tigers, while David Keene’s three-run home run in the first inning set the tone.

Honaker travels to John Battle tonight at 6 p.m. for an interesting non-district clash.

Clintwood 14, Pound 12

Russell Hull went 3-for-5 with two triples and two RBIs, leading Clintwood to a win over Pound in a Lonesome Pine District slugest.

Trey Meade homered and had two hits for Clintwood (9-6, 4-4), while Devin Dotson and Derek Robbins added two hits apiece. Ryan Lyle added a solo homer for the Greenwave.

Jordan Sullivan and Nathan Robinson each collected three hits as the Tigers posted the win.

Joe Yates supplied a three-run homer for Haysi (10-6, 5-2) and Jordan Childress doubled twice.

Despite a 3-for-4 day from Dillon Cridlin, St. Paul suffered a Cumberland District loss.

Mikey Pauley was the winning pitcher for TW and also hit a three-run home run. Graham Clouse added three hits for the Pioneers, who are 6-2 in the CD.

Ronnie Groves struck out 15 and allowed just two hits as Patrick Henry snapped a five-game losing streak.

Groves also went 2-for-4, while Marcus Montgomery added four RBIs. Jared Hamm added two hits for PH (9-7, 4-4). Sam Blevins doubled and drove in a run for Holston.

Pat Begley struck out 11 in a winning decision and also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as the Raiders eased past the Vikings.

Ethan Stewart went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Martinez Miles was 2-for-4 and Will Hamilton also hit a three-run home run for J.I. Burton (12-4, 6-2).

Fallon Thomas and Aubree Hutt each collected two hits as Virginia High (12-1) avenged its lone loss of the season.

VHS pitcher Lannie Johnston allowed just five hits, with two of those coming from Heather Thomas.

Patrick Henry was hurt by four errors.

Kendra Hooker went 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs as Abingdon downed Southwest District foe Tazewell.

The teams played a scoreless 18-inning game last month, but Abingdon’s offense shined in the rematch. Hooker blasted a three-run homer in the third and tacked on a two-run shot in the seventh as well. Allison Meade doubled and scored three runs for the Falcons (12-3, 7-1), who host Richlands on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in a key SWD clash.

Cassie Chadwell drove in six runs, powering Powell Valley to a Lonesome Pine District road win.

Chadwell connected for a grand slam in the Vikings’ eight-run second inning and also doubled in the fifth. Powell Valley starter Kaylla Holdway struck out 10 and allowed just two hits over five innings.

The lone bright spot for Pound was relief pitcher Cande Shortt, who struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings.

Carrie Wisman and Caroline Gentry had two goals apiece as Virginia High vanquished Clinch Mountain District rival John Battle.

Haley Stewart also scored for VHS (9-1-1, 3-0), which had a 39-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Abingdon 6, Richlands 0

Julie Smith scored two goals and added an assist, Jessicca Stepp contributed three assists and Cameron Moss scored a goal as the Falcons (6-3-2) pulled off a shutout.
