Emergency Crews Transport Two To Hospital After Crash Near BMS

UPDATED at 1:10 pm

Bristol Tennessee Police say two people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after driving off a bridge Thursday morning.

The accident happened near the Birstol Motor Speedway on Highway 11E.

The car was driving on the wrong side of the posted construction cones when they reached the end of the road.

The couple went over the side and continued another 10 feet into the creek below.

A car ran off the road near Bristol Motor Speedway this morning.  It careened over a wall and into the creek below, Bristol Tenessee Police dispatchers said.

The crash happened at 6:20 a.m. near construction at the intersection of Highway 11-E and Speedway Boulevard.  The Tennessee Department of Transportation is rebuilding both sides of Beaver Creek and Back Creek Bridges, adding turn lanes, and modifying medians ahead of this year's races.

Emergency workers are on the scene.  They're asking drivers to steer clear until they secure the location.

One person was transported to the hospital, police said.

The race is wonderful for our area and I am proud to live in a race-track town. The race gives much more than it takes, just ask local charities. Regardless, I was coming through the cones this past week for the first time, and it seemed to create an optical illusion that made it difficult to navigate. I suspect there will be more accidents particularly by drivers unfamiliar with the area. May not be fixable, but needs to be considered seriously for a better way.

It's not just about race fans and BMS is not making the cities do anything. BMS has just grown to such a huge capacity that the cities involved didn't have a choice but to change the flow of traffic to make it safer for residents to drive through there. I, for one, am thankful that they're doing something to keep race fans from wobbling out into the road with a posted speed limit of 55! So thank you to Bristol and Bluff City (who are both involved)

That crash had less to do with construction, and more to do with intoxication. There has to be alot out there that hasn't come to light. But this is what happens when your blood is swimming in alcohol

Yes there have been many accidents here in Bristol...because people are CARELESS or 9 times out of 10 they are on a cell phone when they should HANG UP AND DRIVE!! I was a victim of a car accident here in Bristol, that could have been prevented had the driver of the other vehicle been more alert, I was told they were using their phone! Im not saying this was the case in yesterdays accident but everyone in this area knows about the construction in the BMS area, people should be more cautious

This accient had little to nothing to do with the construction in the area. There were other outside factors that contributed to this tragedy. How else would the car have ended up where it did?

Actually the job is funded by several different agencies including Federal grants. I love how people blame everything on someone else. I doubt if that car was traveling at the posted speed limit or other outside factors were not involved it would not have jumped the curve crossed the median then entered the construction zone and into the creek. How is this project any different than any other highway project?

if you have a problem with the traffic i suggest you find another way around it. without the race this area would be nothing if you don't like it move to another state. i think it is great that state and city are making all the improvements

I AM SUPRISED IT TOOK THIS LONG BEFORE A ACCIDENT HAPPENED IN THAT WORK ZONE. JUST REMEMBER EVERYONE WHO LIVES ON THE TENNESSEE SIDE OF TOWN, WE ARE THE ONES WHO ARE PAYING FOR ALL THIS WORK NOT BMS. ITS SUPRISING WHAT THEY CAN GET BY WITH. I HOPE MAYBE THIS WILL OPEN THERE EYES TO SOME SAFETY CHANGES THEY CAN MAKE.

Without the race fans this area would be in a deeper recession than we already are. Be thankful the city is trying to make improvements. You know they are working, pick a different route, be patient.

I agree Bristol is more concerned with tax revenue from the track than investing in infrastructure to create more jobs.
