UPDATE: JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State University President Paul E. Stanton Jr. announced today he is retiring effective March 1, 2009.
He made the announcement during the ETSU Foundation's annual meeting at The Millennium Centre.
Stanton, ETSU's eighth president, said he will maintain strong ties with ETSU after retiring and hopes to serve the university in an emeritus status.

ETSU President Dr. Paul Stanton will make a "major" announcement about his future at the Johnson City -based university.
News Channel 11 has learned the announcement will be made at the end of a meeting of the ETSU Foundation Board. That meeting was set for 11 a.m. at the Millennium Centre in Johnson City.
