One of the fastest rising bands in Christian music will perform in Kingsport, Tenn., on Friday.
While most people might not associate "rocking out" with church attendance, DecembeRadio plans to rock Robinson Middle School for their screaming fans.
Friday’s concert is being heralded as an "informal homecoming," said band member Erik Miker. Having lived in Kingsport for a while, the guitarist attributes his success to the lucky break he got in the area.
"It was at Vision Productions in Kingsport that I first met evangelist Billy Wayne Arrington. I was right out of high school and he was big mentor to me," Miker said.
Band mates Brian Bunn (guitar) and Josh Reedy (lead vocals, bass) were touring with Arrington when they met Miker in 2001.
The Christian music scene has witnessed many new bands rise up in the recent years, but few can claim to have had the success of DecembeRadio. Their classic rock sound has been compared to Aerosmith, Lynard Skynard and Led Zeppelin.
The band is being brought here by Sullivan Baptist Church in Kingsport.
"It was our student ministry at the church that wanted to bring the group here," said the church’s Student Pastor Travis McKee.
Why the Robinson Middle venue?
"Sometimes students are scared to come to church but less so to a school," McKee said.
Show proceeds will go to local Fellowship of Christian Athletes groups.
"This concert is not for our church to make money, but to help the local FCA groups," said McKee.
Coming off a spring tour with Third Day, one of the biggest name’s in Christian music, DecembeRadio was more than willing to play a concert that would benefit Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Miker said he was a "big athlete in high school" and getting involved in FCA for him was very important.
He said the group performs charity gigs only "if it’s something we believe in."
The tickets for the concert are $10 and seating is general admission. The doors open at 6:30.
"I’ve talked to people and the band seems to have a huge following in this area," McKee said.
The band will be playing their "full show," said Miker, including songs from their latest self-titled album. He said their new album is due for release in the August.
"It’s going to be a night of outreach," said McKee. "And it’s not about denomination, but about believers worshipping God together."
