VOICES OF THE MOUNTAINS
Mozart meets Stephen Foster.
Big deal, right? Not so at all.
Mozart and Foster were musical giants from long ago and separate eras, yet on Mother’s Day their music meets courtesy the stellar Voices of the Mountains.
Scheduled for May 11 at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, the show will be something of a yin meets yang performance.
Features include performances of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s "Missa Brevis in Bb Major, K. 275" – not exactly Top 40 fodder, though astounding nonetheless – along with Foster’s more familiar works such as "Oh, Susanna."
Regardless of material, the 75-member strong chorus under the direction of Dr. Pat Flannagan embodies strength in talents combined such as to underline the word power. Voices of the mountains, indeed they are and then some.

SWEDISH PAINTER
Art does not simply just entertain. Art educates. We can learn of times and places and people long filed among history’s pages.
So it goes with an exhibit featuring prints of works by late Swedish painter and illustrator Carl Larsson. Slated to adorn the Booth Center Gallery in Grundy from May 13 through June 26, the exhibit features none of Larsson’s originals. No matter.
Prints of Larsson’s detailed watercolors nonetheless tell the tales through the painter’s eyes of the small Swedish village life that he knew. We can never travel there, meet Larsson or speak with his neighbors. He died in 1919. His neighbors, close family, they are of course gone, too.
Yet much as a fine work of literature can transport a reader as if aboard a time machine to another place and another time, so too can a well conceived work of art. Behold and embrace a time that was and learn.
