PREP ROUNDUP: John Battle Nets Big Tennis Win

Clinch Mountain District champion John Battle improved to 12-0 Monday with a 5-2 decision over J.J. Kelly in the Region D girls tennis tournament at the University of Virginia’s College of Wise.
Emerald Lauzon, Jill Williams, Carly Johnson and Jessie Williams posted wins for Battle. The Trojans face Honaker this morning at 10 in Wise.
“I inherited a very seasoned and veteran team,” first-year Battle coach Randy Coleman said. “We’re excited about our chances to win the regional champion and move on to state.”
Lauzon also posted a singles win in the individual portion of the tournament over J.J. Kelly’s Whitney Bolling, them combined with Carly Johnson for a victory in doubles.
SOFTBALL
Holston 5, Chilhowie 4
Megan Wilson collected three hits and Hannah DeArmond added two as the Cavaliers opened the Hogoheegee District tournament in style with 13 hits.
Senior Nikki Sage, who hit over .400 on the season, drove in three runs on four hits for 11-8 Chilhowie.
George Wythe 12, Rural Retreat 3
Chelsea Hodge went 3-for-3 and George Wythe rolled to a win over Rural Retreat in the first round of the Hogoheegee District tournament.
GW pitcher Retta Jackson tossed a three-hitter and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Kelly Dunagan added two hits in the win.
George Wythe (9-10) plays Northwood in Wednesday’s semifinals at Patrick Henry High School.
Lee High 4, Gate City 0
Bethany Rupert tossed a one-hitter as Lee High blanked Gate City in the first round of the Clinch Mountain District tournament.
Rupert walked one, struck out seven and faced just one over the minimum 21 batters. Rupert also had two hits, while Chealsea Brock’s two-run double in the third inning was the difference at the plate for Lee. The Generals play Virginia High tonight in the semifinals of the CMD tourney.
Alyssa Clark had Gate City’s lone hit.
J.J. Kelly 10, Pound 5
Samantha Brummette had two hits and two RBIs and J.J. Kelly’s offense supplied the highlights in the Indians’ win over Pound in the first round of the Lonesome Pine District tournament.
Lindsay Oakes added two hits for Kelly, which advances to Wednesday’s semifinals to face J.I. Burton. Autumn Chisenhall drew four walks and scored twice, while freshman Kaley Mullins struck out seven en route to earning the win in the circle.
Pound catcher Brooke Stidham wrapped out two hits, adding to her school record career toal. LaKrisha Isaac also had two hits for the Wildcats.
BASEBALL
Twin Springs 7, Coeburn 3
Despite two hits from Hunter Bond, Coeburn came up short in the first round of the Cumberland District tournament.
Aaron McCoy and Logan Adams each had two hits for Twin Springs, while Kris Jordan was the winning pitcher.
Third-seeded Coeburn was competing in its first Cumberland District tourney after years as a member of the Lonesome Pine District.
Rye Cove 8, St. Paul 6
Senior Josh Brooks homered in his final varsity at-bat and also had a double and triple, but it wasn’t enough as St. Paul was eliminated by Rye Cove in the first round of the Cumberland District tournament.
Ryan Padgett added three hits for St. Paul (8-13), while Corey Ellis also homered in the loss.
Jacob Arwood led the way for Rye Cove, finishing 4-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs. The Eagles will play Castlewood in the tournament semifinals.
Council 4, Hurley 3
Kegan Bostic struck out 12 and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to give Council a win over Hurley in the play-in game of the Black Diamond District tournament.
Bostic ended the game by getting a curveball to fall in for a called strike on a 3-2 count. A two-run fourth inning put Council (4-13) ahead for good.
Hurley (5-11-2) was led by Jordan Prater’s 3-for-4 effort.
GIRLS SOCCER
Abingdon 7, Richlands 0
Jessica Stepp and Annie Forrest each scored three goals as Abingdon opened the Southwest District tournament with a win.
Morgan Grant earned the shutout, while Cameron Moss supplied the other goal. The Falcons face Graham Wednesday night at 5 in Tazewell.
John Battle 4, Lebanon 0
Whitney Osborne, Danielle Owens, Laura Ball and Savannah Addair all scored goals as the Trojans posted a Clinch Mountain District tournament win.
Battle (5-6-3) clinched a spot in the Group A state tourney with the win and faces regular season champion Virginia High Wednesday night at Sugar Hollow. That match starts at 6.
BOYS SOCCER
Lebanon 1, John Battle 0
Lebanon’s first-year soccer program posted a landmark victory in the first round of the Clinch Mountain District tournament.
Tyler Orr’s goal early in the second half was all the offense the Pioneers needed as they earned the first victory in program history and also secured a spot in the Group A state tournament.
“These guys have just played remarkable this year,” Lebanon coach David Jenks said. “These two teams matched up well. The first two times we played we went o vertime. We thought we would be able to play with them and we held on defensively.
“These kids played with a lot of heart.”
Lebanon plays Virginia High at 7:30 p.m. in Wednesday’s CMD championship match.
DRAG RACING
Night of Fire set
A Nitro Funny Car, Monster truck and car-eating mechanical dinosaur will highlight the May 30th Night of Fire program at Bristol Dragway.
Other attractions include a wheelstander, two jet cars, and fireworks. Gates open at 6 p.m.
OUTDOORS
Fishing clinic offered
Fishing personalities Lefty Kreh, Flip Pallot and Doug Hannon will hold a clinic from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on May 24th at the Rivers Way Outdoor Adventure Center in Bluff City, Tenn.
