On Wednesday, Feb. 27, just after 10:30 a.m., a young man later identified as Rusty Lee “Bo” Rumley Jr., of Watauga, Tenn., initiated a series of events that would leave five people dead, neighborhoods on high alert and communities wondering how the rampage could have happened.

Rumley, a 26-year old convicted federal felon and a member of the Tennessee National Guard, shot and killed four people, including his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, at the Edgemont Towers high-rise apartment building in downtown Bristol, Tenn. He drove his gray pickup truck to Carter County, abandoned it near his family’s remote homestead and hiked to a hillside a mile and a half away before committing suicide.

Frantic calls to 911 capture the chaos of the shooting scene, as well as desperate efforts to save some of the shooting victims. A lengthy letter and one-page suicide note shed some light on Rumley’s last thoughts, but left unanswered questions for the communities and families affected by the events that unfolded that day and will in the days to come.

Here you will find a collection of reports, audio and video elements that trace the timeline of events as they unfolded in this deadly string of events.
