I have to take issue with Mark Wooten’s comments [page A3, Wednesday]. In Castlewood, across the county line in Russell County, a number of women have had breast cancer, I included. We live very close to that Carbo plant, and I’m sure the mercury it spews is not healthy for people or the environment.

But it makes no sense to say you care about your health but hate capitalism and progress. In point of fact, if we, as a state and a country, looked at developing ways to produce alternative, healthier technology, that would be progressive. But we need politicians with the guts and vision. I doubt that Dominion Power will seek alternative energy sources without a prod from government. (And “carbon capture” is now just a theory, not a viable technology).

Nothing has been said about conservation. We could look at times of the day to use less energy and not overpower the power grid, but no, we can’t do that. That would be intelligent.

If our oil companies lowered the price of gas on their own and used their profits to develop alternate energy sources, that would be intelligent, too. We need some intelligent leadership when it comes to energy!

A business associate of mine just passed thru SW Virginia , coming to my house on his way from Minnesota.
His first question to me was to ask why there were no wind generators here. He says his state is blessed with them and each one will furnish 300 + homes with more than enough electricity. This free energy and it has no carbon emissions.
My only answer can be that greed driven utilities do not want to invest in renewable energy. It would be hard for them to say “the cost of wind has increased so we must raise your rates”.
personally, I think wind generators are a lot more attractive than smokestacks or stripmines. We also have an ample supply of wind, year round.
Saying we need intelligent leaders is correct. It should also be said that we need leaders, Democrat and Republican, that do not have their own self interest at the heart of everything they do.

I give up hope for SW Virginia. Poverty and greed rule here. “ME FIRST” is our motto.
Without the work by concerned citizens in the past and by the ones fighting this plant we would be breathing much more toxic air now and in the future.
People make the changes not big businesses with profits at stake.
It has been a slow trip with only minor progress but over the years it has added up.
I hope we can make the changes needed before it’s too late for everyone.
