The week of Independence Day is often the site of many preparations of festivity, and our city is no different. It was a pleasant sight this Monday afternoon, driving on State Street, and seeing the flags mounted along the border.
Along the Tennessee side, the flags of the United States and the State of Tennessee were all flying at the same elevation, as proper flag etiquette allows. Glancing across the street, I did not see the Virginia flag – until I looked up.
Flags of states should all fly at the same elevation as each other, and may fly at the same elevation as the American flag but certainly no higher.
The Virginia flag was at an elevation approximately twice as high as not only that of Tennessee but also that of the United States.
Perhaps it is no wonder these Twin Cities can’t seem to work together, when the Virginia side seems to feel superior to not only another state but also the country itself. That is unless a commonwealth ranks higher on the pecking order than America herself.
