I am proud to be a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, where I served as a sniper in Vietnam. I was a graduate of the first Marine Corps sniper school and was featured in a book written about the Vietnam-era snipers. After serving in the military, I served the community as a deputy sheriff, Erwin city police officer and a nuclear security officer. I know what it takes to be a true public servant.

I am not happy with the way our government is being run by career politicians. Did you know that Congress only has a 15 percent approval rating? It is little wonder that we have $4-a-gallon gas, soaring food costs, skyrocketing medical costs and unaffordable prescription drugs. It is ridiculous. We desperately need a change!

Our congressman, David Davis, accepts money from political action committees that are responsible for the mess we are in. Let’s give the 1st Congressional District a change in our representative.

I urge you to look at Dr. Phil Roe, a U.S. Army veteran who served as a major in the Korean conflict. As a battalion surgeon in the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Casey, he treated wounded soldiers with care and compassion. Roe has delivered almost 5,000 babies in our area.

Roe has fought tirelessly to keep taxes low by not giving in to the special-interest groups and refusing to accept political donations from political action committees. He is not influenced by big oil companies, the pharmaceutical industry and the many other PACs our current congressman is indebted to.

I urge you to join me in electing a representative who is for the people and from the people. Let’s make Dr. Phil Roe our next congressman from the 1st Congressional District.

Gary Edwards
Erwin, Tenn.
