I learned something about myself Thursday that I did not know: I’m a redneck. But then again, so is every one of you reading this column. Or so says Andrea Mitchell of NBC News.
Mitchell, the wife of former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, actually went on MSNBC on Thursday as Barack Obama was leaving the stage in Bristol and quipped live: “Interesting images today. Barack Obama, Mark Warner, in Southwest Virginia. This is real [chuckle] redneck ... sort of ... uhm ... bordering on Appalachia ... country. This is not the Northern Virginia ... uh ... you know ... high-tech corridor. And these are voters that he would not logically ... be ... you know, gravitating to. This is the beginning of a pivot.”
You know, uhm, I’ve been wondering where all these urges of late have been coming from – namely the desire to trade my Toyota Camry for a pickup, complete with rubber bull testicles (product name: bumper nuts) dangling from the trailer hitch. I’m inexplicably craving chew tobacco. I passed a road-kill possum Friday and thought it looked tasty. And I nearly wore a wife-beater T-shirt to Wal-Mart yesterday, until my wife intervened with “that’s not a good look for you.”
IF MITCHELL were telling Jeff Foxworthy jokes, and let’s hope she could do it without all the “uhms” and “you knows,” her lead would be: “You might be a redneck if you live in Southwest Virginia.”
I have a retort, however: You might be a gold digger if you marry a Fed chairman older than your daddy.
Harsh? Maybe. But the last bastion of acceptable, politically incorrect stereotyping is making fun of Southerners. And we’re damned tired of it.
WHAT IF Mitchell had used this line for a John McCain rally in Harlem: “Interesting images today. John McCain and Mitt Romney, in Harlem. This is a real homeboy … sort of … uhm … bordering on ghetto … country. This is not the west side of Manhattan … uh … you know ... the upper crust of the island?”
Al Sharpton would be protesting and the ACLU would be suing. And perhaps rightly so. But where are our special-interest defenders?
I pity today’s TV news reporters, with 24 hours a day of airtime to fill on cable. That’s about 23 hours beyond whatever intelligent discourse they can muster.
IF A major philanthropist like Don Imus can lose his talk show over a quip – albeit highly inappropriate – “about nappy-headed ho’s,” then what’s Mitchell’s stupid offense worth?
At least an apology.
Thankfully, Obama chose to kick-start his national general election campaign in the very place he has no hope of winning – Southwest Virginia.
BUT IF he can hold down McCain’s rural Virginia advantage, Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads will make Virginia run blue for the first time since LBJ was crowned king of the commonwealth in 1964.
“There’s a reason why the first public event we had, after obtaining the nomination, is right here in Southwest Virginia,” Obama told 2,500 supporters inside Virginia High School’s gymnasium.
“Because Southwest Virginia is an example of so much that is good about this country, but so many people have been forgotten. There are good, hard-working, decent, generous people in beautiful towns all around this region, but Washington hasn’t been paying attention and hasn’t been listening,” the Illinois senator said.
THIS IS a big country, and Obama could have gone anywhere to debut his general election campaign. That he chose our region speaks to the kindness, compassion and energy of its people.
If Andrea Mitchell can ever escape the sucking vortex of the Beltway, maybe she can rent a car and fill it with $4-a-gallon gasoline and drive the six hours and 375 miles from Washington to Bristol.
She won’t be cut off and flipped off by other drivers; she’ll actually get directions and a smile if she asks; and she’ll discover the real America that eludes so many national journalists.
EVERY ONCE in awhile, I take a shot at presidential buffoons or other wingnuts I perceive are doing our country wrong. Anon-ymous Web readers will post comments to my columns on TriCities.com, comments like “this guy is a wannbe journalist. No wonder he’s stuck in Bristol.”
Here’s the deal: I’m not stuck in Bristol. I’ve traveled the country – and the world – and covered some of the nation’s biggest stories. I grew up in Tennessee and lived on the panhandles of Florida and Idaho, in Spokane and Portland – and in Washington, D.C.
I moved to Bristol because I wanted to. We have some rednecks (see the pickups with the fake testicles attached). But Southwest Virginia is no more defined by rednecks than our nation’s capital is by two snipers who terrorized that region nearly six years ago.
It takes all kinds to comprise a country. And along the way, we have to suffer a few Andrea Mitchells.

I never did like Mrs. Mitchell as a news reporter, don’t like her voice or her appearence. However the women needs to take a course in United States Geography. Bristol Virginia does skirt the Appalachian Mountain Range, therefore we are considered to be from the Appalachian Mountains, proudly I might add. But Bristol is located in just a pinhead portion of those majestic mountains. The Appalachian Mountains stretch from Georgia to Maine, so when this poor excuse of a lady, refered to people of the Appalachian Mountains as “rednecks” do you think she realizes just how many thousands of people she insulted?, of course not, she only appoligized to the people of Biistol Virginia not to the many thousands of other Appalachains.
A teacher of mine in High School Miss Kathy Ratliff used to say to us, “internalize before you regurgitate”, Thanks Kathy, Andrea Mitchell should have been a student of this fine southern ladies class.

Redneck Medicine
I learned what a “Top 100” hospital finds as acceptable patient care and its defense as to how to treat a patient going into shock. ( Check and see what the room temperature is ) That could be causing this patient to be sweating profusely, sugar levels out of the ball park, blood pressure dropping, heart rate increasing. UT seems to be teaching this ‘redneck medicine’ to future nurses which is pathetic and is a joke. The room temperature comment by an educator and a hospital is unacceptable.

I love my heritage. I love my southern roots and I love my country. I love this area and wouldn’t change it at all! If Andrea Mitchell wants to show her ignorance - then so be it. I just laugh at her.. and go about my business. The more people think that this isn’t the place for them because it isn’t a “high tech corridor” the less we have to deal with them. I’m from the Southwest Virgina - I can take a little teasing and guess what- it doesn’t hurt my feelings! Thats whats wrong with the world today!! Oh my goodness.. she/he got her feelings hurt.. Give her a million for mental anguish and it will all be better!! Grow up Southwest Virginia - stop pouting…

Mr. Foster - Wit is the best weapon, and you use it to perfection. Thanks so much for socking it to that hideously biased Andrea Mitchell. She deserves every word, and then some.

Mr. Foster - What better way to stick it to Mitchell and the actual, real-life lemming elitists who happily follow and uncritically follow in the wake of a snake oil salesman than a hilarious but dead-on Southern style hit. I had to leave that network when Olbermann, along with Matthews, Fineman and Alter began their pathologic attacks on Hillary Clinton. Will be looking forward to more of your work.

thanks Todd Foster.
it is the Andrea Mitchells of the world that breed the racism in our country today. this country will never change. the reason being is people like her. They breed this attitude of it okay to refer to people in these phrases You can call it what you like but in the end it is good ole racism. You won’t hear the people like Ms. Mitchell comment on the jews as she did about the people of bristol because that is too close to home. she is married to one. she won’t comment on the blacks because she has to live with them in new york and they know where she lives. she would also lose her job just as any media person has in the past few years. yes we tolerate this type of hate when it spoke of about southern people. it just shows you that no matter how well educated you are, or how fine a school your mama sent you too you are a RACIS Andrea Mitchell. Yet we fire the dj’s and we suspend the media, but what price will andrea pay. nothing because msn and the typical media groups don’t find it news worthy and in fact justify it by saying it is the truth.

My response was actually at the time the VERY LAST one. No matter, even though this speaks volumes about the reading comprehension of the respondent.
Truth be told, I’m not complaining in the least about another wild generalization concerning Southern people or Southwest Virginia folk in particular. I believe that nearly all stereotypes by definition have their basis in fact, and retain various degrees of truth in their descriptions of the group in question. Sure, SW VA and E TN have their share of what the elite term “rednecks”, and some of those rednecks are a few Buds short of a sixpack. What of it?
What I’m commenting on is the fact that those elitists who would deny the above truism are the first to disparage Southerners and SW VA/E TN folk in particular. And these elitists are also the ones driving situations upon this nation and the people of the South such as the necessity to attack Iran and Iraq in order to protect a “democracy” in the Middle East. They’re also the first to denounce the perceived “racism” in the Deep South, while refusing to live anywhere near the noble folk they pretend to defend. These same elitists, like the blowhard in the response below, enjoy placing themselves on a pedestal and enjoying thoughts of cultural superiority while as a class being the very cause of the cultural, financial, and foreign affairs disasters we are now witnessing.
Many people I’ve met from Seattle always agree that it rains constantly there; they say it’s a 24/7 downpour when questioned about the local weather. I’ve never witnessed much more than the ever-present haze there; sure it’s wet, but it doesn’t actually rain that much there. I’ve found that they do this in part to deflect the tourist and relocation floods that might result from the realization that it’s actually not so unpleasant there most of the time. I generally do something similar when questioned about my homeplace. I let people think that snake handling, outdoor plumbing, and shoeless pedestrians are common occurences. I let the elitists have their moments of satisfaction and their oh-so-tolerant smug chuckle about the area they will never be able to recognize and enjoy as one of the most beautiful and hospitable (within reason) regions on earth. Otherwise, we might have (as Mr. Foster so eloquently said first) many more of the “upper crust” of Manhattan down South swinging golf clubs, mixing Martinis and demanding bagels tp go with their grits. This would be a tragedy far worse than some gold-digging upper-crust denizen of the infotainment world making the usual disparaging comments about folks who neither need or desire her attentions.

It is somewhat funny that the VERY FIRST reader response to this great column contains this lovely gem: “And that’s not to mention the “upper crust” of Manhattan, whose violent dislike of nearly all “others” is matched only by their absolute revulsion over the Causcasian Christians found in Southwest Virginia.“
yep, nothing like making a wild generalization about a section of the country so you can complain about, er, wild generalizations about your own section of the country. Way to go, Virgina! Stay classy.

A great response.
I’ve spent a significant portion of my working life visiting inside the Beltway; I think some of your gentle qualifiers about the people found there are not warranted. The great majority of them feel exactly the same disdain for the Southern region and its people that Mitchell let slip. Why give them a pass, or imply that we think they are mostly good folk just like us? And that’s not to mention the “upper crust” of Manhattan, whose violent dislike of nearly all “others” is matched only by their absolute revulsion over the Causcasian Christians found in Southwest Virginia.
Elsewhere on this site I posted the below response. It’s not as reasoned or well-mannered as your excellent and professional response, but perhaps I’ve had a bit more time to be exposed to the “tolerance” and “inclusion” of the Obama-loving elites and media that Mitchell represents.
PS- Great gold-digger shot. Harsh? Not nearly enough.

Keep in mind that Mitchell is married to the big government/“conservative” fiscal hero and architect of our current financial disaster. Yet she looks down on the shoeless rednecks of Appalachia.
I grew up in Bristol and have lived in a large Southern city for twenty years. Much of the suburban population here is made up of transients from the Northeast. They are unified in their disdain for Southerners, even as most of them proudly exhibit their “tolerant”, progressive views. Its disturbing to note that many natives of the South will join this bandwagon in order to curry favor, fit in with the elites, or to avoid social ostracism for not being sufficiently evolved.
Twenty years here in a city that just doesn’t “hate” has led me to believe that the only answer may be to revive a serious drive for Southern secession, while enacting a plan to expel the liberal Northern transients along with the associated foreign elements they profess to tolerate and love (but whom they would never stoop to live among).
Hopefully they’ll take the phony Bush-loving, rapture-bunny “conservatives” with them so the South can re-establish the Republic destroyed in Lincoln’s Whig/mercantilist/railroad war.
Thinking Southerners should recognize that this current “democracy” is being led by mob-rule imperialists and psychotic Armageddonites supporting foreign nations over their own with Southern lives and treasure- and abolish them.
Along with Andrea Mitchell.

Comments such as the ones made by Andrea Mitchell about the people of Southwest Virginia and Eastern Tennessee are the reason why I no longer have any faith in our national media. They are convinced that they are among the elite thinkers in our country today, but I see them as puffed-up liberals who have absolutely no idea of what life in our country is like. They try, and a great deal of the time succeed, to shape the future with supposedly learned comments about the residents of our great country, but they have absolutely no idea of anything beyond the boundaries of Washington, D. C., and New York City. We are the people with the ideals upon which this country was founded—they (the media and our left-wing liberals) have tried every way they know to subvert our ideals, but they will not succeed.
