UT President Outlines Budget Cuts

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A University of Tennessee Board of Trustees committee is reviewing cost-cutting measures in the wake of funding reductions for higher education.
    Gov. Phil Bredesen is asking each state department for reductions of as much as 15 percent to take care of a budget shortfall of potentially $800 million.
    Higher education accounts for about $1.2 billion of the state budget, and Bredesen anticipates cutting roughly $150 million from it. UT President John Petersen told the board’s Effectiveness and Efficiency for the Future Committee in Nashville on Wednesday UT’s portion of that amount would be $48 million to $72 million.
    University officials expect to get a firm budget cut figure from the state in mid-December, and plans call for presenting a proposed UT budget to the governor in January, Petersen said.
