Today is the last day Tennessee residents can register to vote in the Aug. 7 election.

People must fill out a voter registration application in person at their local county elections commission office by 5 p.m. if they want to participate.

They can also download an application through the division’s Web site – http://www.state.tn.us/sos/election/forms/ss-3010.pdf – and mail it to their elections commission office, but the application must be postmarked with today’s date to qualify.

Early voting for the Aug. 7 election will run from July 18 through Aug. 2.

Here is a list of the races that will be on the ballot next month in Sullivan County and other parts of Northeast Tennessee:
Republican and Democratic primaries: Three Republicans – including incumbent U.S. Rep. David Davis – and two Democrats are seeking their party’s nomination to run for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in the Nov. 4 general election.

Six Democrats also are seeking their party’s nomination in the primary to challenge U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Republican, this November.

Sullivan County Commission: Two people are running for a seat representing the County Commission’s 3rd District, while five have filed petitions to run for its 6th District seat. These two seats are currently held by Commissioner Jon Harr of Bristol and Pat Patrick of Kingsport, who have both announced plans not to seek re-election.

Sullivan County Board of Education: Four school board members – Betty Combs, Jack Bales, Charles Kiss and Ronald Smith – are running for re-election without opposition.

Sullivan County constables: Forty-seven people have submitted petitions with the county board of elections seeking 12 constable positions.
