The Marion, Va., man charged Friday with murder in the death of his infant daughter originally claimed the child fell from a deck before police say he changed his story several days later and confessed, said Marion police Lt. Darrell Hayden.

Travis Ray Hester, 26, was alone while caring for 11-month-old Belle LeAnn Hester on July 26 when he “lost his temper” and inflicted head injuries to the infant, Hayden said. She died the next day as the result of a skull fracture, Hayden said.

After conducting an autopsy, the medical examiner in Roanoke contacted the Marion police on July 27 and said the infant’s injuries did not seem consistent with a fall from a deck, Hayden said.

The department began investigating, Hayden said, but waited until after the funeral before questioning the parents on Aug. 1.

“We interviewed him here Friday and the story changed enough to where there was a murder one charge made,” Hayden said. “He confessed to causing the injuries.”

Marion Police Chief Michael Roberts would not discuss the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, except to say, “It’s hard to call it an accident. I can’t talk about his intent but I don’t think he intended. He just lost his temper.”

The incident occurred at Hester’s father’s house on the 700 block of Hill Street, where Hester, his wife and their only child were living, according to Hayden.

Both Hester’s father and wife were at work when the baby was injured, Hayden said.

It is not known what time the baby was injured, but Hayden said it occurred some time before the child’s mother got home from work around 10 p.m.

The couple took their daughter to Smyth County Community Hospital, and she was later flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Hayden said.

“The mother was completely distraught,” he said.

Hayden said Hester does not have a criminal background or a reported history of abuse or neglect. However, he said several witnesses have said Hester “had an anger problem.”

“It’s a tragedy for the whole community for something like this to take place,” Hayden said. “It’s real bad.”

Hester is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon on a charge of first-degree murder. If convicted, Hester could face a sentence of 20 years to life in prison, Hayden said.

You are right it does take a sick person to hurt a precious child.  He is not only sick but he is also EVIL.  Today the little angel Belle would have been a year old.  I feel sorry for the mother and her family.  But the father’s family I don’t. How could they stand behind a Child KILLER?  I hope that he gets what he deserves.

He needed help long ago. all he ever cared about was his next ‘buzz’ and didnt care how he got it. All he was concerned about at the funeral was ‘if there was any money left could he have it’
My heart is with this mothers family I cannot imagine how they are to deal with this hideous assault on beautiful Baby Belle.Ive known this jackass for a few years now and Im suprised someone hadnt already beat his head in.
Belle was killed for crying the sickest part is ‘what she was crying about’
It is no myth what happens to these kind in prison as he will soon find out.I just hope he realizes there is a God before then.A God he has been shotting the middle finger at for years.

I know some of the family of this little angel. I know they are hurt by what this man has done. I feel for them.  Where I work one of the family works with me. We took up some money for the family, I dont know how to go about it but there should be a way to make a trust fund for the mother and her family. The trust fund should be used for their recovery from this.

I judged him as I stood in line at Belle’s funeral.

The whole story is extremely sad.  We never know what truly triggers people to commit such atrocities.  We should all pray for healing for all involved as well as for little Belle who has returned home.

My heart goes out to the mother.  She was out trying to make a living while this thing called a “Man” was left in charge od caring for this beautiful little angel. I wonder how she feels about him today.  I would HATE him as long as I live for taking such a percious gift from me.  Maybe he will get the same treatment this little angel Belle got.

Adoption is not always the answer. I was adopted by a woman with a severe anger problem, and all her anger was directed toward me. Since I was an infant when adopted, you can say the abused lasted 50+ years, until I lost “mother” 2 years ago. Sassy1, remember “Judge not less ye be judged”.

I hope some big ole’ badman in prison “looses his temper” with hester and cracks his skull for him. If horrible people don’t want these babies, I wish they would give them up so someone good could adopt them.

My heart goes out to the mother, grandparents, and everyone who knew and loved this little angel.  As for the father, I hope the bastard gets what’s coming to him.
