ABINGDON, Va. – One man was injured in a wreck this afternoon on the northbound onramp of Interstate 81’s Exit 19.

Traffic was blocked in both lanes when a medical helicopter landed on the interstate to pick up the injured man, who was transported to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries are not known at this time.

According to a trooper with the Virginia State Police, a Dodge Durango slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer as the truck braked for a car that slowed so others could merge onto the interstate. Rescuers tore out the roof and side of the sport utility vehicle to extricate the man.

Both lanes of traffic had opened back up by 4:30 p.m.

Learn the name of the injured man and more details of the crash in Tuesday’s Bristol Herald Courier.
