Update:

The Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office says they first got word about the unusual mode of transportation at approximately 2:30am in the form of a call telling them there was a golf cart travelling north on Intersatate 81.  Deputies spotted the white golf cart near mile post 21 and say it was being driven by Ryan Daniel Montgomery, age 20, of 2247 Urchin Road, Virginia Beach, VA.

According to Sheriff Fred Newman, further investigation into the incident revealed that the accused had been arrested earlier in the evening for possession of marijuana and was taken to the to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon, VA, and released on a $2,500 bond.

A Sheriff’s Office news release says, “Apparently, the accused left the Regional Jail, walked to the Exit 19 area, and stole the golf cart,” stated Sheriff Newman.  “He then entered the interstate and traveled approximately two miles before being apprehended.” The Sheriff says Montgomery was arrested, charged with grand larceny, and “carted off” to the Regional Jail where he is currently incarcerated under a $2,500 secured bond.

“He was trying to make his way home – to Virginia Beach!!!” said the Sheriff in the news release.

If you could get arrested for being STUPID...they couldn’t build jails fast enough.

Hmm, he is from Virginia Beach, which begs the questions, how did he get here in the first place and why didn’t he go back the same way he came (presuming he didn’t arrive on a golf cart)?

Was this a much older man?  I can only imagine an elderly person a bit off center to attempt such a feat.

What was he going to do when the battery died? Did he honestly think he could get to Virginia Beach?
