6,200 East Tennessee State University students, alumni and staff may have had their personal information compromised.
David Collins, ETSU Vice President of Finance and Administration, confirmed to News Channel 11 that someone broke into a locked office and locked suite last month and stole a computer containing private information like social security numbers.
Collins says there was no sign of forced entry, though the room was locked and a big screen tv was also stolen.
The stolen computer was password protected, so the university believes there is only a slight chance the thief could find that confidential information.
The university has contacted the people they believe could be affected by this theft.
