Abingdon, VA—Washington County Fire Department removed a partially-decomposed woman from the second floor of an abandoned house Monday morning.

The house, located in the 15000 block of Wyndale road, hasn’t been occupied for years, Sheriff Fred Newman said.

The woman, described as heavyset, was wearing a pair of blue jeans and a short-sleeved tee-shirt.  She died more than three months ago, sheriffs said.

Newman called the case “a suspicious death investigation,“ but said medical examiners in Roanoke would determine whether or not a crime was committed.

Capt. Jack Davidson said the family called 9-1-1 “as soon as possible,“ but it was too dark to start their investigation by the time investigators reached the scene.  Newman stationed a sheriff’s deputy at the home and re-opened the investigation Monday morning.
