DAMASCUS, Va. – Town Council members voted unanimously Tuesday night to hire Tuesday Pope as the town’s clerk.
Council members voted during a called meeting Tuesday since the board failed to vote on hiring a clerk on Aug. 13 when a new police chief was hired with a 4-2 vote.
Mayor Creed Jones said Pope, a Shady Valley, Tenn., resident who works at Belk, was one of the finalists interviewed for the position.
Council members discussed hiring a clerk in closed session during the Aug. 13 meeting but did not vote on the move during the open portion because the job candidate they agreed by consensus to hire, Gayle Karriker, had not been notified, Councilman Johnny Blevins said following the meeting.
Karriker, who was town clerk in Glade Spring, said last week she was notified after the Aug. 13 meeting and told she was needed immediately in the Damascus position, so she resigned her job in Glade Spring.

It is really a shame that a nice town like Damascus has to endure a group of clowns like the group currently running the town. They should clean house-starting with Creed Jones, the meglomaniac mayor. He is a disgrace, and has no business holding a public offfice.

I will not be spending any more money in Damascus until they make things right with Gayle.

Ms. Karriker should probably consider herself lucky to not have been hired. I don’t understnd why anyone that did not live in Damascas would want to get involved in that mess called the Town Council. They seem to enjoy giving folks the shaft and giving it often.

The lack of professionalism, morality, and ethics of the Damascus town council is now causing harm outside of its own town limits. Its patently obvious that the Damascus town council is completely incapable of governing itself.
How many more incidents do we need before state oversight is required? How many more irrational Damascus town council members do the citizens of Washington county (and beyond) have to endure before we see effective governing? How many criminal activities are a direct result of the Damascus town councils blundering? We’ve now see another job lost due to outrageous decisions and yet no change is in sight. Does someone have to die before the people of Damascus (and surrounding areas) receive a government body capable of true leadership?

Damascus is one messed up policitical little town and i would recommend that everyone avoid it. Its nothing but a big political disaster. Their local government officials have ruined it. The police department is in shambles as well. Avoid that town at all cost.

I wish this lady all the best in looking for a job. Sounds to me like the town of Damascus is the last place I would want to work. If they sink this low when hiring, makes you wonder how they treat you after you are on the job.Wait, Maybe that is why the turnover is so great in this town!

This is absolutely unbelievable!! If indeed they notified this lady and she quit her job, where does this leave her? I do believe I read in a former article Ms. Karriker has children to provide for. After following the articles detailing the problems in Damascus, it amazes me that the same town council still sits to make decisions…..and bad ones at that. I don’t know any of these people, but from what I read some major overhaul needs to be performed. Come on people of Damascus…..WAKE UP!!!!!!!! Why do you allow this behavior and bad decision making? Seems you can’t keep police protection…you can’t keep town positions maintained…something is desperately wrong here. Talk about backwoods politics, this seems a perfect example. Time for the citizens of Damascus to stand up and make a difference. Time to stand up and be proud of your beautiful town and proud of it’s leadership. I do hope the council sees fit to feed Ms. Karriker’s children and provide necessities for them until she is fortunate enough to secure other employemnt. And oh…by the way..people of Damascus…if you’re going to allow these people to continue to sit on the council and make bad decisions, someone at least purchase a copy of “THE HOW TO BOOK FOR TOWN COUNCIL DUMMIES” for them eh? Sheesh!
