Two people are dead in what Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes is calling an apparent murder-suicide. Deputies discovered the bodies of Larry Dale Hughes, Jr. and Diana Shell late Tuesday night, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
Hours before the shooting, Sheriff Mathes said deputies were attempting to serve multiple warrants on Hughes at his home. However, when they arrived, they discovered evidence that he possibly kidnapped Shell, Mathes said. Deputies say Hughes had a history of alleged domestic violence.
Around 8:45 pm Tuesday night, deputies found Shell’s car, abandoned in the Dennis Cove Community of Carter County. Three hours later, they found Hughes and Shell dead in a mountainous area of Dennis Cove.
Although neighbor Larry Wright didn’t know the couple, he knew of them.
“I always wondered what kind of trouble was going on and I figured it was domestic violence,“ Wright said.
Wright says, in the past, he had seen plenty of blue lights at the trailer on Mountainview Drive in Hampton, a place Hughes and Shell’s children called home.
“It’s unfortunate that this tragedy happened you know,“ Wright said. “It’s always the kids that got to pay the price.“
However, according to court documents, those kids may have been paying a price all along. Their mother says she was. In 2001, Shell, who was Diana Hughes at the time, filed a domestic assault report claiming abuse by the man who was her then-husband. She said, “I feel in danger for my life and for my kids lives.“
Just eight days ago, a full seven years later, she echoed those same fears. in an August 12, 2008 Order of Protection sought against Hughes, she said, “He threatened to kill me once again.“
“This is the worst-case scenario in these domestics,“ Sheriff Chris Mathes said. “That’s why we urge people to take these kind of cases very seriously.“
Deputies tried serving that order protection to Hughes several times over the last week with no luck, Mathes said. In fact, that’s what brought them to the Mountainview Drive trailer on Tuesday. However, when they arrived, Sheriff Mathes says the house was in disarray. Still, in the mess, they found a note, perhaps from the gunman himself.
“Possibly he was saying goodbye to the kids,“ Mathes said. “There was a note that said she was leaving. It didn’t say much more than that.“
Eight hours later, deputies found Hughes. Hundreds of yards off a gravel road, deep into the woods, they also found the lifeless body of his ex-wife; the woman the courts were ordering him to leave alone.

I knew Diana. I wonder if the sheriffs office would be so lax if it were one of their own that lived in that fear. Two little boys are left behind because the system did not take her seriously. What will it take before the system changes? I know from experience that people are sometimes served months after they should have been. I have been told that they serve papers as they have time. How much time does it take to save a life? How much time does it take to follow thru and serve those papers when someone fears for their lives? Domestic violence is often not given the attention because it is so difficult to “find” the people involved. Even when they are given current addresses and directions to the people who are being served it can sometimes take weeks or months before they follow thru. Yet if it were someone on the police force the time and attention would be there. People are losing faith in our system. We are losing faith in our police system and often do not want to help because we are treated worse than the criminal. This was not the first time there had been violence in that house hold. This was not the first time the police had been called for this family. What is it going to take to put domestic violence ahead of traffic tickets. Will it take a community of orphans? I am sad for this loss. I am sad for those children who now do not have either mother or father. I am also sad we cannot depend on our police to protect us.

This is a complete shame. He obviously needed help and tried to ask for it. How many people knew his plans (including the cops)Its a shame that the police didn’t do their jobs and 2 people paid the price. I know from experience they do not always come when they are called. There is a lot more to this than people know. Yeah sure, let Mathes sue the county for more money when they don’t do what they are paid to do now. My heart goes out to both families. God Bless!

This is a shame and as the neighbor said…it’s the kids who have and will continue to suffer. Maybe they will understand soon that there is now some peace for them…and that their parents will now rest in peace.
I also hope that Carter County is better at caring about and following up on these things than Washington County VA is! and that is from experience.
