An 8-year-old Florida boy survived a black bear attack in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park last night, according to an Associated Press report today.  The boy’s father reportedly was injured while defending him.

Park rangers later killed the bear.

The attack took place in LaConte Creek near Rainbow falls around 7:30 p.m. Monday.  The bear approached Evan Pala of Boca Raton, Florida, while he was playing in the creek.

The boy suffered some puncture wounds that were serious but not believed to be life-threatening, according to the AP.

The father, John Pala, suffered several cuts during the attack.
