A crowd of approximately 150 people attended the first Floyd Town Jubilee event, Concert in the Park on Sunday, June 16.
Floyd Town Council members have given their approval to a proposed budget for the coming year. A public hearing has been set for Thursday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the W. Skip Bishop, Jr. Town Hall.
Bad weather, age and wear have taken their toll on Floyd County’s emergency and police radio system, and the company that repairs it thinks a maintenance contract is in order.
Several representatives of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office were present last Thursday evening as members of the Floyd Moose Lodge presented them with a computer system valued at $3,500. Known as Cop In A Box, the system includes a computer, monitor and printer. The high-speed computer is forensics capable and is used by law enforcement to track down sexual predators and those involved in child pornography.
Several members of the Floyd community attended the showing of “House of Good and Evil” at the Arizona International Film Festival April 27. The film, which was shot in downtown Floyd and at the historic Cannady Schoolhouse last Fall, had been selected as 1 of the 40 films submitted from all over the globe. It was given the honor of showing the last night of the festival.
A severe thunderstorm, moving through Floyd County this afternoon (June 13), has caused power outages. Over 1,200 outages were reported at mid-afternoon.
Floyd County Democrats followed the state trend in voting for Ralph Northam for Lt. Governor and Mark Herring for Attorney General in Tuesday’s statewide primary. Those candidates join Terry McAuliff, the unopposed choice of Democrats for Governor, on the ballot for November’s General Election.
The Class of 2013 at Floyd County High School was recognized in a ceremony in the school gymnasium Sunday, June 2.
The inaugural season of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival (VBRMF) was kicked off with a brass fanfare at the Artisan Market Friday evening (May 31). Playing alongside the Market Pavilion, a group of academy student musicians and faculty mentors added a new flavor to the jamboree scene and drew an enthusiastic crowd. The informal, free concert was the first of eleven festival days of orchestra concerts and chamber ensemble performances scheduled at various venues around the county.
