Bland Ministry Center accepting donations for Christmas program

With Christmas just over five weeks away, the Bland Ministry Center is again partnering with the Bland County Department of Social Services to provide toys and food boxes to qualifying families in the county. Toys for age infant to 18 must be received by Dec. 9.

College renews lease

Wythe-Bland Foundation awards variety of grants

Funds to teach first aid and CPR to ninth-graders in Wythe and Bland county schools are among the $1.7 million in grants awarded this week by the Wythe-Bland Foundation. Twenty-one other programs in the two counties received funding for projects with an emphasis on health care needs.

The countdown to Tuesday’s general election has begun. Virginia gubernatorial candidate Republican Ken Cuccinelli spoke to a packed house at Wytheville’s Italian Garden Restaurant Thursday afternoon. Cuccinelli will travel throughout the state over the next five days campaigning in hopes of securing the commonwealth’s top spot. He is running against Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Libertarian Robert Sarvis. Polls open Tuesday at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Bland County 4-H holds day camp

Bland County 4-H members were introduced to several topics during a day camp program at the Bland Fairgrounds. Jeannie Layton-Dudding, Bland/Giles Ag Agent, and Devan Buck, 4-H Program Assistant discussed the benefits of livestock showmanship and demonstrated with “Georgia” the goat. The group learned about Virginia’s agricultural products and then assembled their own commodity pizza. Participants also learned how to vaccinate with a banana as their pretend animal.

Camp provides several opportunities for youth and teens to excel and develop new skills. Teens give assistance to activities and help teach classes during the week-long camp. Luke Litton and Erica Muncy were given the “Explorer Sidekick” award for outstanding leadership. Derek Richards was awarded the “Spirit Stick” based on his enthusiasm during camp.
