A 37-year-old Indiana man died early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 81. Victor Khari Griffin of Indianapolis was killed at 6:55 a.m. after his 2013 Nissan Altima hit an embankment and overturned on its top near Exit 84, state police said.
According to Trooper Chris Thompson, Griffin was traveling southbound in the left lane when his vehicle suddenly swerved into the right lane, hit an embankment and overturned. His body had to be extricated from the car, the trooper said.
A passenger, Luther Chaney, 27, of Indianapolis, was not seriously injured, Thompson said, and declined treatment. He and Griffin were friends and were headed to Memphis, Tenn., the officer said.
Trooper Thompson said the cause of the crash is under investigation. He would not rule out the possibility of mechanical malfunction.
As of late Thursday afternoon, the officer said he had not had the chance to fully examine the vehicle. The tires were all flat and the airbags had deployed at the wreck scene, Thompson said.
