More than 4 million residents in Tennessee and Virginia are hopping in a car, plane or train for a holiday trip this year—an increase in traffic for both states for the official Christmas travel period, according to road agency AAA.

Projections posted by the automotive think tank last week have more than 2.7 million Virginians making travel plans for the holiday reporting period that began Saturday and ends on Wednesday, Jan. 1. In Tennessee, the number is 2.1 million.
