The first female rector of Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors, who is set to take her seat on Tuesday, worked her way through the university in the 1970s as a typist and secretary, and went on to own a multimillion-dollar health care company in Roanoke.

Debbie Petrine, a native of the Glenvar area of Roanoke County and now a resident of Hardy, was elected as rector by a unanimous vote of the board’s members on June 2. She will replace Rector Mike Quillen of Bristol.
