Anthony Flaccavento jokes that he fell off his tractor and hit his head when explaining why he’s running for Congress.

At age 55, the Democratic candidate is making his initial run for public office, challenging first-term Republican incumbent Morgan Griffith, a Salem attorney. In his previous job as head of Appalachian Sustainable Development, Flaccavento worked closely with legislators on every level.
