WYTHEVILLE, Va. — Ron Kime grew up on Big Walker Mountain, watching his parents build a business and his father an observation tower — at least half of it — bolt by bolt.

For decades, he and his family have welcomed weary tourists in need of an ice-cream cone, a souvenir or a chance to stretch their legs by climbing the stairs to the top of the 100-foot tower for a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding mountains.
