A group of environmentalists filed a civil lawsuit in federal court Thursday against the Red River Coal Co., saying the company has violated the Clean Water Act.

The suit filed in U.S. District Court in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, by Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards, the Sierra Club and Appalachian Voices seeks an order for Red River to comply with water requirements, pay penalties up to $37,000 daily for each violation of the Clean Water Act and to conduct monitoring and water sampling.
