Bristol Herald Courier

Sophomore catcher Adam Skoranski went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Josh Verts had an eventful day, leading the University of Virginia’s College at Wise to a 10-7 win over Union (Ky.) College in the NAIA Region XII baseball tournament in Kingsport.

Skoranski had a RBI single in the seventh inning and blasted a solo home run in the ninth inning to help UVa.-Wise (31-21) remain in the winner’s bracket.

The Highland Cavaliers will play Tennessee Wesleyan today at noon at Hunter Wright Stadium.

Meanwhile, Verts went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and recorded his fifth homer of the season. He also was the winning pitcher, tossing 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

Mike Lang added three hits, while Brad Robbins went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cavs. David Jones got the final two outs for his second save in as many days.

Tennessee Wesleyan 11, King 10

Despite two home runs from Justin Reising, King College saw its season come to an end with a loss to Tennessee Wesleyan in the NAIA Region XII tournament.

King (31-18) actually led 7-6 after five innings, but couldn’t hold on. It was the second straight day the Tornado had lost a one-run game.

King made things interesting in the ninth inning against Tennessee Wesleyan closer Jon Swartout. Senior first baseman Mike Torrence, in his last collegiate at-bat, led off the inning with a homer to cut the lead to one. Brad Coulter and Ryan Kennedy followed with hits, but King couldn’t scratch the tying run across.
